The Athi Kapiti Plains comprised of an area of 20 000 acres located only 40km from Nairobi. The Athi Kapiti conservancy offers the most accessible game-viewing location in close proximity to Kenya’s capital city, Nairobi, outside Nairobi National Park. It also holds some of Kenya’s most astonishing wildlife, including the country’s only white-morph cheetahs.
Leopard stalk the riverbeds and thickets, lions are occasionally visible on the grassy plains while giraffe, herds of antelope and zebra dot the open plains. The conservancy and surrounding plains are the preferred calving ground for the wildebeest migrating from the southern plains of Tsavo West, Chyulu Hills and Amboseli. For those visitors particularly interested in bird life, the conservancy and plains have recorded more than 40 raptor species!

Day 1: Saturday

Pick up at 6:00 am in Westlands for a prompt departure at 6:30 am. Drive for approximately 2hrs and arrive at The Kapiti Ranch. We shall settle into our camp and then head out for a ride into the conservancy for the rest of the day. Dinner will be served in the campsite while you enjoy the sounds of nature around a campsite.

Day 2: Sunday

Wake up to a breakfast with a view of the dam, then head out for a ride and return in time for lunch as we wind down and head back to Nairobi at 4pm, arrival in Westlands at approximately 6pm.

The Athi Kapiti Plains is an expansive dispersal area that includes 6 private ranches to the south, south east of Nairobi that amount to a block some 3.5 times larger than the National Park. It also lies in the centre of an annual cyclic event that may now dominate the ecology of migratory animals in the region. It is part of a much larger area that sees the transitory movement of large ungulates and zebra, but due to its to habitat quality, sustainable human density, rainfall and soils it is perhaps now the most important and still-intact feeding and calving ground for these migratory animals.
